Anna English

English is currently the Senior Account Executive on the digital corporate team at Edelman, located in Washington D.C. Anna graduated from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln in the spring of 2015. Her course of study was on track in the advertising world from the start, as she started as a journalism major, and happened to take an intro to advertising and public relations class. English mentioned she loved how creative she got to be in that class, and she realized advertising and public relations might be a better fit for her than journalism. Anna English spent two semesters in Jacht and she learned a lot during that time, such as balancing different client projects and working with different team members. English served as the copywriter, editor, account planner, and web developer during her last semester in Jacht.

As she started interning, she was able to learn she had a strong foundation to take her career in many different directions. English also said there were many real-world nuances she was able to get used to before starting her own career. Although Jacht is an Advertising Agency through the College of Journalism and Mass Communication, there was not a certain faculty member that stood out to English. All of her professors shaped her career in their own way. She took a variety of classes – some more creative focused, some more research focused. After her junior year at UNL, Anna English landed her first internship with Bailey Lauerman. Because English was a student of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, she had a better chance of getting hired by Bailey Lauerman, as they love getting students from the CoJMC because it is such a strong program that produces students that are motivated and smart interns.

With her new career, the thing English finds the most rewarding is nurturing new talent. She loves watching an intern come in with basic knowledge and watching their confidence grow as they begin to understand client nuances. English finds the most challenging aspect about her career is working with many different people across the globe. She mentioned it can be hard to schedule a meeting when everyone is awake and it only gets more challenging as new people are pulled in on projects.

English’s most difficult scenario she has encountered was when she had to travel to Spain to staff a client conference. She got a bug that had been going around. It was a challenge to know how much she needed to be on-site, English got on a nine-hour flight even though she would have much rather been at home in bed. Upon her arrival in Spain, she went to check-in to her hotel and realized she had left her wallet in the cab. English mentioned looking back now, it is a funny story even though it was incredibly stressful at the time. She also said though her personal life was a mess, the event went flawlessly.

English said she has never had the same day twice while working at Edelman. She typically goes into work, makes sure she is prepared for all of the meetings she has coming up that day and to make sure that all of her deliverables are on schedule. English also may have to write social copy, check in with their creative team, or get on the phone to answer a client’s question.
